Teach me.. how to make an everyday film

Beautifully vibrant and effervescent Bron of Maxabella Loves is on a quest to learn new things. As if she's not a smarty pants enough ALREADY?! She asked me to share some tips with her on how to make everyday films. How to turn everyday, routine, kinda boring stuff into great little time capsules!

Of course I was happy to oblige. I received such an overwhelmingly warm response following the piece I put together for the recent Voices of 2014 Online Masterclass (the actual link to the video seems to be on the blink - perhaps email Kidspot if you would like to view it) - so many of you contacted me to say how inspired you felt to make films - and within a week or two you sent me links to the wonderful beginnings of your journeys into film making! I love making films and I love seeing others being bitten by the bug and trying something new too.

So head over to Bron's and have a little look. You can see a little film I made about a trip to the playground on Easter Sunday morning, back in April. While you're there, be sure to check out Bron's beautiful photos from her family's recent holiday to Fiji - so beautiful Bron! And so not jealous. AT ALL.

  2. Great post Tahnee! I actually took some footage this afternoon to try it out. Just a quick question... When u focus do u just keep pressing the shutter button half way down??? And do u use the manual settings on the camera?
    Thank you!

    1. That's so great! Yes, I shoot manually when filming - in the beginning I barely read my camera manual for the film setting and couldn't figure out what the horrible noise on the audio was, and why it was SO LOUD?!! It was the camera trying to focus by using the shutter. So to eliminate the sound, you need to focus manually - it feels a bit weird to begin with but with a little practice, it feels very natural and you will get better and better at it. Enjoy!

  4. I loved this post. I did have a question for you. How do you go about backing up/storing your footage? Do you keep all your unedited clips or do you discard those after you have made your film? And then how do you store...blu-ray data, dvd, external hard drives? I've heard differing opinions on the best way to keep the footage safe and viewable for future.

    1. Thanks Ashley! I back up to external drives, and there is always a copy on my Vimeo account. I delete all unusable clips the first time I look through them once loaded into iPhoto. As for the clips I only use parts of - for example if I used 3 seconds of a 10 second piece, I would rarely delete the remaining 7 seconds. They don't take up much space on the computer but it's just not a habit I have created, but occasionally I will go through and delete anything unusable.

  5. I think you need to pull together an online class on photography and video for bloggers IMMEDIATELY, Miss Tahnee. You have such a lovely way of explaining things. It makes me think 'yes, I could give that a go!'. Thank you for teaching me that for sure! x
